The Real King of Limbs

To no ones surprise, I'm a huge Radiohead (no shit). Last year was such an amazing year to appreciate they're music with the release of they're new studio album The King of Limbs along with four extra singles and the TKOL Remix album. Through all of the music madness with the band releasing new music throughout the entire year I found a new site called The King of Limbs part 2 which suggest in its title that there might be a second part of the album. TKOL2 quickly became a favorite site of mine with regular updates on the band and what they're up to along with fan made videos and art work pertaining to the music. A little community. I recently sent the web master Josh Kirkpatrick a list of questions about the site and its origins and he was kind enough to answer. Read the post below and enjoy.

1. Why start the King of Limbs part 2?

I started the TKOL2 blog after reading some of the initial rumors of there being a second part to The King Of Limbs. I kept finding all of these different things, but they were scattered between several sites and message boards and it was really hard to keep up with, so I brought all of the information to one place. I really never thought it would grow to the level that it did.

2. How did you feel once TKOL2 started getting a lot of hits and even featured in RollingStone music magazine?

I was really shocked to see it on Rolling Stone, that was really the first big site that mentioned the site. To see it mentioned on so many websites was really cool for me. I really didn't have any expectations for the site when I started it, so to be mentioned by sites like Rolling Stone and Pitchfork is something that I'm really proud of.

3. For a website built around a conspiracy that TKOL would have a second album how hard was it to hear Ed O'Brien confirm there will be no TKOL2?

When Ed O'Brien dispelled the Part 2 rumors it wasn't really a big deal to me. I think a lot of people were expecting me to be upset, though it wasn't that way at all. I literally received hundred's of emails and messages that day urging me to keep the site going, which was really touching for me. Even though the band didn't officially release a "Part 2", they did end up releasing 2 new singles with a total of 4 new songs, 8 remix singles, and a 2 disc compilation of remixes.

4. What’s your favorite track off of the album?

My favorite track from the album is still probably "Little By Little", maybe it's the guitar riff? That track has stood out to me since the first time I listened to the album.

5. You have been very cool about posting Radiohead fan videos. Have you ever considered making any?

I try to post as many unique videos as I can find. I don't have any plans to make any of my own, though I might try to film a few clips when I see them on tour next month.

6. How has TKOL2 changed your life?
Well, it's been quite an experience. I really didn't know anything about running a website when I first started, and I'm still learning. I'm always trying to learn new things and come up with ways to improve the site. For me the biggest thing is that so many people come to read it everyday, that really means a lot to me. And I've met so many people from all of the world that I probably wouldn't have met otherwise.

I wanna start this post off by saying "Fuck the NBA's greedy overpaid asses." What happened to love of the game? More like "Love of the money."

Now going back to the regular post pertaining to the last chapter in the Christopher Nolan Batman saga............

The third film coming out next summer is titled The Dark Knight Rises which is the last in the Batman series directed by Nolan. Christian Bale said that this is the last time that he will rock the cape crusaders costume if y'all fools don't believe me read the quote below.

"I believe that the whole production wrapped yesterday, so it's all done. Everything's finished. It's me and Chris – that will be the end of that Batman era."

I think its best to go out with a bang instead of eventually giving Batman nipples on his suit and a cock piece like some other jizz collectors named Joel Schumacher. Nolan confirms that this is not only going to be the end of the franchise but its also going to be fucking epic.

"It's really all about finishing Batman and Bruce Wayne's story," he told Empire Magazine. "We left him in a very precarious place.

"Perhaps surprisingly for some people, our story picks up quite a bit later, eight years after The Dark Knight. So he's an older Bruce Wayne; he's not in a great state."

Everyone who has seen The Dark Knight knows that Joker fucked shit up so hard for Bats that my man had to go into hiding to save Gotham Citys punk asses so it makes sense that Bats needed time for himself to think over some things like dressing up as a damn Bat and fighting crime. Real talk yall. The best part of TDKR is the villain Bane played by the English(does anyone else find it strange that the whole motherfucking cast of an American iconic comic are all played by foreigners? The US needs to step up its talent game) actor Tom Hardy. Hardy says this about Bane which makes me feel better about myself knowing that Im always right and should keep going with my gut because this fool will straight up Curb stomp fools.

“He’s brutal. Brutal. He’s a big dude who’s incredibly clinical, in the fact that he has a result-based and oriented fighting style. It’s not about fighting. It’s about carnage. The style is heavy-handed, heavy-footed, it’s nasty. Anything from small-joint manipulation to crushing skulls, crushing rib cages, stamping on shins and knees and necks and collarbones and snapping heads off and tearing his fists through chests, ripping out spinal columns. He is a terrorist in mentality as well as brutal action.”

The costume designer had this to say about el Baneo

“He was injured early in his story. He’s suffering from pain and needs gas to survive. He can’t survive the pain without the mask. The pipes from the mask go back along his jawline and feed into the thing at his back, where there are two canisters.”

So the overall impression about Bane is that hell beat your ass into next Tuesday.

This film can not come out soon enough but you can catch the Six min teaser trailer during the Mission Impossible film this month. Im gonna go see the film not only for that reason but also because my brothers and I always see a shit film for the Holidays so I know what were gonna see:)

Skate rats rejoice. The Girl/Chocolate boys are at it again offering us up a new teaser trailer for theyre new film to be released next year. Im super stoked on this film with Girl been my favorite skate team along with being a huge inspiration in all of my branding. The Girl boys are all about fun. With a roster of new riders like Sean Malto, Mike Mo and Cory Kennedy not mention iconic names like Eric Koston, Mike Carroll, Brian Anderson(all former Skater of the Year) and Spike Jonze whom is directing. We can expect the unexpected and we are all funna be in for a treat.

Very serendipitous that the last post features the dancers from Batsheva. Well get back to that in a minute........

So, in this world you have 3 types of people which i break down like this.

people who asked "What Happened"
people who saw "What Happened"
people who MAKE IT HAPPEN

My close friend and frequent collaborator Garen Scribner falls into the third category of making it happen and on a constant. The special thing about Garen is that he does not only just make things happen for himself which is so easy to do noways with getting caught up in your own little world and shameless self promotion to move forward in life but Garen is another breed entirely. He enjoys more making others dreams and visions come true which is rare nowadays.

I want to share with you his most recent endeavor which would allow one of his students from South Africa (more on that below) named Byron Klassen to fly to NYC from South Africa to audition for Ohad Naharian who is Artistic Director of Batsheva Dance. Batsheva is the same company that i blogged about right before this post and one of the best modern dance companies in the world. Now we are getting an impression of Bryons talent level:) This is such a special opportunity for this kid with so much promise. Ive seen video of him in class and rehearsal, Byron lights that ass up. Its easy to envision him below getting down and dirty with the dancers from Batsheva. I hope everyone helps support him by spreading the word and donating. With all of that said......Im gonna pass the mic to Garen to give more deets.

As some of you may know, I spent part of the summer in Cape town, South Africa teaching dance in the Dance for All program. Along with the rest of my LEAP South Africa team, we created a two-week intensive for almost 100 students. We had an incredible time and loved working with the children.

We saw so much talent, but recognized something very special in one student in particular named Byron Klassen. We really believe in his innate talent, and are working to bring him to New York so he can be seen by choreographers and directors. He is 19, and ready to move into the professional world. He simply needs the opportunity!

Dancer Craig Black writhes his way through a period apartment in upstate New York’s Mount Kisco in Benjamin Millepied and violinist–turned-creative director Timothy Fain’s saturated short. Set to minimalist composer Phillip Glass’s rousing score “Partita for Solo Violin,” the film is part of Fain’s immersive multimedia film series, Portals. Yesterday I was out running some errands and I saw some street skaters putting it down at the famous 3 up 3 down skate spot on mission street. After watching for a while i noticed that one of them was Greg Lutzka who i recognized the Maloof Money Cup which he just won, Street League and the Dew Tours. The other dude i noticed looked familiar but i did not know his name. After speaking with Lutzka for a while (he's a super cool dude and needs to hit me back about this skate spot I was gonna show the Dark Star team) I had learned that the team was in town shooting some footy for Thrasher Magazine.

Fast forward to later that night, i get a Twitter follow from @maloofmoneycup. Random but def cool. Today I look and see Lutka and the other guy skating from yesterday named RYAN DECENZO battling it out for the prize purse at the Maloof Money Cup on Hella Clips.com

Random as fuck but yet another example of how awesome life is if you just open yourself up to it.

As I live and breathe, I'm not sure I really get this new craze called Planking? Maybe I'm too old to fully comprehend all of this but to the best of my knowledge as I understand it, you sit and lay across something and its called Planking?

Now Im all for getting out there and trying new things but isnt this whole Planking thing a little lazy? Ive been planking everyday for at least 5 to 8 hours all my life and Im not making a big deal out of it. I mean, maybe I have seen Planking for a few years now and did not even know it? The real people whom should get credited for starting this craze are the drunk homeless people in the Tenderloine. Ive seen those fools walk(stumble/fumble) into the middle of the intersection and Plank theyre asses down towards on coming traffic and stay Planked in the middle of the street. That's some motherfucking Planking. Not this "Oh, Im going to sit stiff across a park bench. Look at me. Look at me" dumb shit. I might sound bitter because I miss the days of Freestyle walking. Its obvious solo modern dance choreography or improv is the new hot shit on the streets right now. Ive been doing it for years but never in a million years did I think that it would ever catch mainstream attention which it has. Lets look at the evidence.

First our good ol friends over at Radiohead started us off with Lotus Flower. A video with Thom Yorke dancing to choreography by Wayne McGregor which is def as modern as one could get but you can see the music in the body which is awesome. Next up was Eryka Badu dancing a solo that she improvised herself in the video Out of my mind, just in time. Now Robyn has a new video out with her ass dancing in a warehouse thus confirming what i believed all along that dance is the new hot shit right now in music videos. Soooo.........I always catch shit for watching Gossip Girl on the hit network the WB from my friends for at least a couple years now. That show is like a guilty pleasure for me because clearly its dumb as fuck. The only redeeming quality of the show for me are the women on it which makes its worth it even though they're dialogue makes me wanna punch myself in the teeth. I always knew that if I held out a little longer something good would happen because the show is starting to become more and more unbearable with horrible plot lines, friends who openly backstab and plot to ruin each others lives and then go shopping like nothing happened. I want to pay some respect to Gil Scott- Heron because he has been on my mind for the past week before his passing. I was recently asked by a theater director to use some text from any poet that I personally find moving for an up coming commission and he was at the top of my list. Gil Scott was known as being the grandfather of rap, a title that did not sit well with him because he viewed himself more of a writer/poet but none the less a prolific artist. For all of you who are not too familiar with his work please read this article in the New York Times about his life and do some research on him yourself because he was a very powerful artist and human being with such an incredible voice.

Ok. Ok. I know that two back to back post about Beyonce is a little much but she is killing it right now.

Watching this video i was a little depressed about how well she integrated multi-media into her show which is something so many choreographers have been trying to do for years and have failed miserably. A huge budget helps dont get me wrong. I was also sad about how this could be the end for the elusive creature known as the Back up dancers and maybe even the majestical Video Hos........Le sigh, that's a world that i could not live in. Further on into the video I saw a glimpse of hope in the world in the form of a split egg or LES TWINS. Those crazy french basterds (hehe) made it all up in the video and brought a smile to my face so thanks.

Over the past week Fox news has started a smear campaign against the liberal rapper Common. Common is known in the Hip-hop community as being socially conscious with his lyrics, very positive compared to many others. Maybe even soft. He is very well respected and loved for his lyrical content until the Republican party and Fox news deemed him too offensive to be invited to the White House for a poetry reading. Personally, I dont know what they are trying to prove by attacking Common because all of this hoopla is proving how old, racist and out of touch the Republican party and Fox News are. Thank you Jon Stewart for defending him and putting the whole thing into perspective.... this should have ever been an issue. The whole thing is disgusting and sad.

Judging by the clips and the little I have heard about the production its cool to see her use her dancers as modern day super heroes. Look at the part with Jermain flapping his cape like Tetsuo from Akira or the end of the video with her dancers turning into Voltron like Giant Robots. This women never ceases to amaze and she only gets better with time and thats why we should be together!

Ever since last February when Alex and I were approached on the side walk by my house as we were rehearsing for lord knows what by the SF Chronicle, I have never known what to do with the actual material.

Long story short,

We were work shopping new material outside my house because it was too hot to work in my home studio and a photojournalist so happened to stroll along, see us working outside and asked us if he could shoot for a section called "A day and life of San Francisco Artist."

I had no clue what we were gonna do with the material aside the fact that I wanted to work out some new movement ideas. I did not know what medium the material would be used in or what context. A few days later we shot and filmed the material on Haight and Laguna at a Street Art installation featuring SF artist Jeremy Fish.... Fast forward a couple weeks later, we were featured in the SF Chronicle with an editorial/ interview. All of a sudden I was sitting on a street dance that i never thought about doing along with the film but no idea what to do with it. Of course i would tinkle around with a few concepts but nothing seemed to work because there was not enough material. What we had worked out was by no means a full piece. Not a rehearsal. Not a clip. Not even long enough to be a clip. We only had 45seconds of actual footage and 15 seconds of choreography. I gave myself nothing to work with because the context of the material was very site specific interacting with the surroundings. All the photojournalist did was capture the whole process. Due to the fact i had nothing to work off of I decided that it be best to not worry about it until something hit me.

A couple weeks ago something hit me.
Radiohead my favorite band released two new tracks titled Super Collider/The Butcher. Super Collider is a solo piano song that Thom's been playing for a year or so and with the band involved its a whole new beast. This one in particular song sparked my interest because its about the shelf life of a particle which is insane to think about. Thom had given the the smallest, quickest microcosm of an event a soul with major complexity and there lied my answer... I was going to make a video. Now i finally had something to use as a blueprint or launching point. I already knew that the material would not suffice for a full edit but if i put it in the right context combined with the music, lyrics and tone I could make it work. Next thing you know I'm turning 45seconds into Seven minutes which almost seems impossible but so is making a song about a particle explosion. The final product is by no means a dance film or even a about the dance. That concept was thrown out the window a long time ago. This is a music video that explores the beauty of being lost in a perpetual moment.
